You talk with Mike and Tiffany at lunch. Youve done some great research and brought up some good ideas to implement in the presentation, you say. There is one element that we are missing.
One of the most important aspects of the strategy: our competitors, Tiffany states.
Ive already done some analysis, and there are many in the global market. It seems like there are several office furniture companies thriving, but not as many custom furniture manufacturers, Mike elaborates. Well, we need to provide the board with some solid competitors. Ill work on finding our top two, you say. Complete the following:
Who are your top 2 global competitors in the market?
Provide a strengths, weaknesses, opportunities, and threats (SWOT) analysis for each competitor.
Why are they direct competitors?
What is their competitive advantage?
Could you form a cooperative strategy with any of the competitors?
If so, how?
If not, why?
What strategies could you use to build a competitive market profile?

Response to Ursula K. Le Guin’s “The Ones Who Walk Away from Omelas”
In 1-2 pages, answer the following prompt:
Ursula K. Le Guin’s “The Ones Who Walk Away from Omelas” contains patterns and themes remarkably similar to Shirley Jackson’s “The Lottery.” What are they? Would you say that they have similar messages for their readers? If so, how so? If not, how are their messages different? Is the child in the story a scapegoat, like Tessie, or is another mechanism at work?
In developing an interpretation of the story’s message, consider William James (1891) passage, from The Moral Philosopher and the Moral Life, that supposedly inspired Le Guin to write this piece:
“[I]f the hypothesis were offered us of a world in which … millions [are] kept permanently happy on the one simple condition that a certain lost soul on the far-off edge of things should lead a life of lonely torture, what except a sceptical and independent sort of emotion can it be which would make us immediately feel, even though an impulse arose within us to clutch at the happiness so offered, how hideous a thing would be its enjoyment when deliberately accepted as the fruit of such a bargain?”
Is the utopia of Le Guin’s story a hideous thing? Do we damn ourselves for our enjoyment of its benefits? What are our alternatives?
In this context, what do we make of the suggestion made by the Omelas/Salem O palindrome that the story is about US society? Or rather, how is Omelas a microcosm of Canadian society? Upon which historical injustice is the prosperity of Canadian society constructed? How does this injustice continue in the present? How would addressing it result in a shift in the societal mechanisms that create prosperity? Is justice for the child in the story possible, or desirable?
Finally, what does it mean to walk away from Omelas? Is walking away enough? What would you do? Would you walk away or remain in the city, enjoying its pleasures? If you choose to remain, what does one do with the knowledge of the city’s hidden child?

Global Expansion & Balance Scorecard
Deborah enters your office ready to discuss the project. She discusses her feedback on the plan thus far. She states that your team is doing an excellent job researching and you’ve been keeping her up-to-date on your findings. She commends you for your focus on effective management strategies because your team has been looking at every aspect of the company and considering both internal and external pros and cons. She asks that your team now apply the findings to develop a strategic framework so that the company can begin its global expansion programs. You decide that Deborah has brought up another good point and decide that the balanced scorecard would make a good part of strategic framework.
A balanced scorecard suggests that we view the organization from four perspectives (the learning & growth perspective, the business process perspective, the customer perspective, and the financial perspective). Create a 2-3 page paper that discusses the following:
Briefly discuss the four perspectives of the balanced scorecard and analyze what each means to your organization.
In addition to the balanced scorecard, provide an overview of two other strategies that would be part of your companys strategic framework for global expansion.
Why is it important to combine different strategies when pursuing global expansion?

In Chapter 13 we read how Christianity rose from persecution to predominance. Other than the crucial factors of sincere belief in God and Christ, there are four reasons given for Christianity’s final victory over competing faiths, and fearsome persecution. Discuss these and consider which one of them you feel had the most impact upon Roman culture. After you have discussed these reasons; now address how today’s Christians could impact Western culture to draw others to Christ. (275-350 words)

Lying and Culture
While the video “Liar, Liar, Pants on Fire,” was created about 20 years ago, it is still relevant today from a social psychological and sociological perspective. Using your sociological imagination, discuss the impact of lying on our culture today. Have our social institutions caused the incidence of lying to decrease, stay about the same, or increase? And why do you think this is the case?
