Drawing on what you’ve learned about gothic literature this week, explain what qualifies Poe’s “The Tell-Tale Heart” and “The Fall of the House of Usher” as works of gothic literature. What do these stories have in common? What gothic techniques do they employ? How and why do they disturb readers? Even as you endeavor to fully answer these questions, you should avoid the impulse to list every single gothic characteristic these stories contain. Structure
Your post, which is essentially a short essay, should include an introduction

2. Fill out the Organizer on Your Chosen Methodology:
Using the same graphic organizer that you used to analyze a poem and a passage from a play, you will now choose the theory that you think is most appropriate for analyzing the short story you read. You will fill out the graphic organizer only for your chosen theory.

How do you decide which theory is most appropriate? By now you will have discovered that different theories highlight or reveal different aspects of a text. For example, if you applied feminist literary theory to the scene you read in Hamlet, you may have focused on the power struggle between Hamlet and Gertrude, or you may have focused on Hamlet’s strange obsession with his mother’s sexuality. However, if you tried to apply post-colonial literary theory, you probably wouldn’t have been able to identify any significant ideas. On the other hand, the reverse was probably true for the poem The History Lesson.

Remember to think of the different theories as different lenses. Much as a photographer chooses different lenses when he or she photographs different subjects, you can choose a different lens to analyze different texts. You should choose at least five different things from the short story to analyze.

Your company has developed an artificial knee joint that is less expensive than the competition and will dramatically reduce healing time for patients. However, it is also known to produce a serious and potentially lethal infection in a small percentage of patients. The company refuses to disclose this potential side effect. You feel you have a duty to divulge this issue, but you signed a nondisclosure agreement when you were hired and worry about possible repercussions.

Find an opinion article, such as a letter to the editor or other editorial. Write an essay evaluating the author’s argument and article’s validity based on the presence or absence of logical fallacies.
