Which one burner could you temporarily turn off so that you can devote your full attention to a difficult or time-consuming college assignment?
For this exercise, imagine your priorities in life are represented by a 4-burner gas stove, as shown in the graphic below, where a burner is your health, another is going to college, another is being present for your family/friends, and the last is being present for your work (if you have a job). Your number one priority is to keep the college burner going and you only have a limited supply of “gas” (think mental, physical, and emotional energy). Which one burner could you temporarily turn off so that you can devote your full attention to a difficult or time-consuming college assignment? What are the pros and cons of temporarily turning off that particular burner?
During the most demanding times in college (think of midterms and finals, for example), which two burners could you temporarily turn off so that you can devote your full attention to college? Why? What will you gain? What will you lose?
Are there any circumstances under which you’d turn off the health burner (where health means getting 8 hours of sleep, eating nutritious meals, staying hydrated, exercising regularly, and having peace of mind)? Why or why not? What will you gain in the short term? What will you lose in the short term? If you continue with your health burner turned off, what could you lose in the long term?
