Discuss the strengths and weaknesses of the arguments in two articles and then prove to your reader why one is stronger than the other.

This doesn’t mean argue for the one you agree with or the one you like better—instead you will carefully look at
what kinds of writing strategies each author uses, how they get their points across, and the strength of their
claims and evidence to decide which article gives a stronger example of argumentative writing.

When analyzing your two sources, look to see what argument elements listed below the authors employ and
analyze them to compare and contrast the strengths and weaknesses of your sources to ultimately decide which is stronger. These are things you can talk about in the body paragraphs of your essay.

Ethos, pathos, logos
Tone, style, purpose
Inductive and deductive reasoning
Toulmin Model elements (claims, grounds, warrants, qualifiers, rebuttals)
Rogerian Model elements (finding common ground)
Logical fallacies.

Your Sources
First choose an ethical issue involving animals (meat eating, animal testing, hunting, and zoos/aquariums are popular choices, but don’t be afraid to explore what’s out there). Then, find two articles on the topic that each 1) take a stance on the topic (in other words, present an argument rather than a pro/con or merely descriptive style) and 2) are on opposite sides of the issue from each other (ex. one claiming that hunting is ethical and the other claiming it isn’t).

Grading Criteria:

After examining Holland’s Six Basic Types of Vocational Interests (Figure 7.1), how does the career of human services match (or contradict) your own vocational interests?

Briefly discuss how gender, family and genetics may impact career selection.
What effect does age have on job performance? What is the reasoning behind this?
What experience have you or someone in your family had with career recycling?
Define and give statistics regarding nontraditional students. (Now doesn’t that make many of you feel better?!!)
After reading the section on Work and Personal Life, discuss how work has impacted your own personal life (make sure to include both positive and negative impacts, as well as discuss each of the subtopics [individual, marriage, etc.])
What are some reasons for the increase in older workers (i.e. NOT retiring)?
List and briefly comment on the reasons for retirement.
Discuss the effect of retirement on poverty.
One thought of aging is that adults work until retirement, then go home and never return to the workforce. Why is this a stereotype associated with ageism rather than a reality?
Look over Table 71. Review of Changes in Careers over Adulthood. Discuss yourself in relationship to this chart and your age.

Case Background: The death of 18-year-old Michael Brown in Ferguson, Missouri in 2014, brought renewed national attention to the use of force by police officers in minority communities. This tragedy and corresponding protests also led to an investigation and report by the U.S. Department of Justice focusing on the way that state and local courts are financed. The reliance of many municipal police departments and courts on fines and fees has been called “taxation by citation”.

Use the information in the readings, videos, or podcasts to answer the questions below. Use and cite information from at least 6 of the linked sources in your report, including at least 3 readings (including under “Recent Reforms” list of readings). If you use other sources to answer, include citations of those sources at the end as well.

In about 4 double-space pages, use the Case Study readings (attached below) to create your own report to respond to the questions below. Do not include a title page, and put the end references on a separate page at the end.

Write your answers in your own words and use direct quotations minimally or not at all. If you use direct quotations be sure to use quotation marks and citations. Include in-text citations for use of any source material, whether or not you directly quote the source.

Explain the connection between Michael Brown’s death and the way that the local court system in Ferguson was funded.
What state and/or local changes in municipal finance have been made in Missouri and nationally since 2014?

What further changes are needed at both state and local levels, to reduce court system reliance on local fees and fines, according to advocates of criminal justice reform? What two changes would you prioritize, based on your review of the problem? Explain your reasoning.
Which state public officials or combination of state and local officials have the authority to make those changes?
What social, administrative and political factors are limiting or preventing further change by those authorities to prevent further deaths?

Legal and Ethical Scenarios

Select two of the scenarios provided below. Analyze the facts in the scenarios and develop appropriate arguments/resolutions and recommendations. Support your responses with appropriate cases, laws and other relevant examples by using at least one scholarly source from the SUO Library in addition to your textbook for each scenario. Do not copy the scenarios into the paper. Cite your sources in APA format on a separate page. Submit the paper to the Submissions Area by the due date assigned.

Scenario I: Courts and Alternative Dispute Resolution

Alana Mendes suffered from Alzheimer’s, and was admitted to the Bay Pines Rehabilitation Center. Because of her mental condition, Alana’s daughter, Juanita, completed the admissions paperwork and signed the admissions agreement. The admissions documents included a clause that required parties to submit any disputes for arbitration. When Alana was released from the center four months later, she sued for negligent treatment and malpractice during her stay. Bay Pines moved to require arbitration.

This is a claim of negligent care, not a breach of a commercial contract. Is it ethical for medical facilities to impose mandatory arbitration? Is there really any bargaining over such terms?
Should a person with limited mental capacity be held to the arbitration clause agreed to by the next-of-kin who signed on behalf of that person?
Scenario II: Due Process and ADR

In 2016, a report found extremely high rates of obvious plagiarism in the theses of graduate students in the MBA program in the College of Business at Western State University. Two full-time faculty members and three adjuncts were identified for ignoring their ethical responsibilities and contributing to negligence toward issues of academic misconduct. Assistant Professor Mark Day was one of the five professors identified in the report. The findings were published during a press conference in May 2016. The dean of the College of Business, Derrick Dawson, removed Day’s responsibilities for advising graduate students and scheduled him for undergraduate courses for the next semester. Day filed suit in a federal district court against Dawson, the university, and others for violating his due process rights by publicizing accusations about his role in plagiarism without providing him with a meaningful opportunity to clear his name in public.

What does due process require in these circumstances?
Would the outcome be different if a mandatory arbitration clause was provided in Day’s contract and the university filed to dismiss the suit to require arbitration?
Scenario III: Regulatory Agencies and Ethics

Jessica Smith is the vice president of new drug development at Generic Phama, Inc, a pharmaceutical research company in Boston, Massachusetts. One year ago, she filed an application with the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) to obtain approval of a new drug for treating cancer. Smith met Joe Spencer at a convention three months ago and invited him to her room at the hotel. The two parted ways. Spencer worked as the director for approval of new drugs at the FDA. Two weeks later, Spencer wrote Smith a letter on FDA letterhead stating, “It was nice to see your name cross my desk on our company’s application for approval of the new cancer drug. I’d really like to see you again. Why don’t you come visit me in Washington this weekend?”

Smith considered requesting that the petition be referred to another director at the FDA. However, she is concerned that the transfer would delay the approval process for at least a year. Smith’s chief scientist advised her that a key competitor plans to introduce a similar drug on the market in three months.

Are there any legal or ethical barriers to relationships between corporate officers and members of administrative agencies involved in reviewing or regulating corporate activity?
What should she do?
