Task:
We are halfway through the novel 1984 and we have had many discussions about the contents and how it relates to past and recent history. For this research assignment, you will research a communist, socialist, or other totalitarian government such as China, Venezuela, Iran, North Korea, Russia, Cuba, and Weimer (German)Republic, Italy (Pre-WWII-WWII), etc. Research their history of when they began a more totalitarian form of government from a more democratic form of government. What was their society like before? How did it transition? How did people react? Who fought for the change in regimes? Who fought against it? Why did the resistance party fail in its efforts to keep a democracy? What propaganda was put forth to try and change people’s minds on both sides of the fight? What laws were put in place by those who came to power to keep fear in people so they would be subdued to not fight? Are they still totalitarian today? Why or why not? Research anything else that would be pertinent to understanding how governments change.
Once you have researched a communist, socialist, or totalitarian government, you will then do a bit of research on the United States and see if we, as a country, may be headed in that direction. What were the founding fathers’ intentions for this nation? Why? How has the United States started to go away from those intentions? What kinds of changes have been made in recent history such as the renaming of military bases, schools, buildings and so forth; or taking down statues and such to try to erase history? Is it good to erase history? Why or why not? What can we learn from our history: the good, bad, and ugly? What kind of trends or movements have been and are happening now to change the United States? Who are the big power players pushing these changes? Are they dangerous or helpful to our Constitutional Republic? Why or why not?
using the research write a 4-5 page paper using the sources that will be relevant to your paper. The first part will be about the history of the country you chose to focus on. The second part will be the information you found regarding the current issues happening in the United States to determine if we are going the same/similar or different way as the country you chose to focus on (compare and contrast). The last part is to bring in what you know about 1984 so far and the warning George Orwell was giving when he wrote this novel.
