Assignment
Each student, in consultation with a supervisor, should identify a patient case about which a
PICO-CAT is going to be developed. The prerequisite for identifying the patient case is that the
PICO search leads to at least 4 original articles or 1 Cochrane review from peer-reviewed
journals. Once the patient case is established, the student independently performs the PICO-CAT
and summarizes it in a PowerPoint presentation of approximately 15 minutes, using no
more than 20 slides. The PICO-CAT should be performed within a time frame that allows
allows the PICO-CAT to be presented in the same department where the patient case was established. The
2
time of presentation and its organization will vary by department and
will be determined in consultation between the student and the supervisor.
Because the performed PICO-CAT should be presented concisely, here are some
guidelines for the structure of the presentation. Linked to these guidelines are the components
on which students will be assessed. The guidelines will show that the PICO-CAT should not be presented in detail.
detail should be presented. Although a careful execution of the PICO-CAT
is necessary for an applicable end result, the presentation of the PICO-CAT should be
be feasible within the framework of the department in which the student is working.
Keep in mind that the PICO-CAT assignment is a presentation assignment for which not all the information in the
PowerPoint needs to be incorporated. A design with a few one-liners per slide is preferred.
preferred. Stay within the maximum of 20 slides!
Presentation Layout.
– One slide presenting the case (clinical scenario).
– A few slides about the condition ending with the question for the PICO (clinical
scenario,
clinical question).
– One slide on the search strategy performed (literature).
– A few slides with the analysis of at least 4 publications or 1 Cochrane review in relation to
the question (literature, review articles and evidence).
– Use table to discuss similarities and differences of individual studies. You
do not need to discuss the method, results and discussion of each study separately. Use
little text and mainly abbreviations, numbers and symbols in the table to provide overview.
– Statistical analyses performed are not an essential part of the presentation, the
conducted research designs with inclusion and exclusion criteria are.
– One slide summarizing the results in relation to the question and an
answer to the question (conclusion).
– One slide with implications for treatment and/or research related to the case
(conclusion).
– One slide for bibliography (literature).Assignment
