Which rhetorical appeals does the advertisement use effectively?

Select a print or other static advertisement (online, in a magazine, a billboard – not something
moving like a video). Using both rhetorical analysis and the design principles you’ve learned in
class thus far, analyze the extent to which the advertisement’s argument is successful in
achieving its purpose. You must address all three rhetorical appeals (ethos, logos, pathos),
though it is fine to say a type of appeal is not present or is not successful. You must also
address at least 3 of the design concepts from Chapter 1 (CRAPE +).
Your presentation must be 5-7 minutes in length. Practice! It takes a substantial amount of
material to speak for this long. Points will be deducted from presentations that do not meet

this requirement. You are also required to use a slideshow and/or sufficient other visual aids.
You may choose to record yourself giving the presentation or to submit a narrated PowerPoint,
in which we hear your voice narrate the slides.
As this is a course in visual literacy, the effectiveness of your slideshow and/or visual aid designs
will be considered in your grade. In addition to the presentation, you will also submit a one-
page outline of your argument. Please see the rubric for additional evaluation information.
Things to consider during your analysis:
• What is the advertisement for? Who made it? Where did it appear? When?
• What is the advertisement’s purpose? How do you know?
• Who is the intended audience? How do you know? What do you know about this
audience?
• To what extent does the advertisement achieve this purpose?
• What is the immediate context? The broader context?
• Which rhetorical appeals does the advertisement use effectively? Ineffectively?
• Which design concepts are used? How effective are they? Do they help achieve
something specific?
• Does kairos play a role?
• Is their text in the advertisement? What role does this play? What can you say about the
text design? About the way the text interacts with the visuals?
• What could be changed to make the advertisement more successful?

Identify, discuss & compare the special needs the populations may face, which either constitute their primary problems or contribute to their development.

1. Identify TWO marginalized/oppressed populations (by race, gender, sexual orientation,
socioeconomic status, disability, etc. or any combination thereof). Indicate the reason behind your interest in the populations, and its direct connection to social work practice. (You must provide some data specific points on the trends associated with both populations.) (POPULATION: Black Women, Intimate Partner Violence and Criminalization vs. Hispanic Women, Intimate Partner Violence and Criminalization)

2. Identify, discuss & compare the special needs the populations may face, which either
constitute their primary problems or contribute to their development. Discuss, in general,
how and why these special needs tend to develop for the oppressed/marginalized
populations or why they persist. (Consider any biological, psychological, spiritual, fiscal
or environmental influences on these needs.)

3. Reflect (identify, compare and discuss) on AT LEAST TWO theories of social work
practice and indicate which theories seem best suited to deal/assist with the special needs
of the marginalized groups. (BRIEFLY discuss the main points of the theory selected, but
spend more time discussing the connection made between your populations and the
theories’ framework). (THEORIES: 1. ECOLOGICAL THEORY; 2. FAMILY SYSTEMS THERAPY)

4. Identify and discuss your basic assumptions, especially as they apply to the diversity in
culture, ethnicity, race, gender, class, religion, sexual orientation, disability, etc. about the
populations.

5. Discuss how theories challenge the basic assumptions outlined by your groups when
discussing the oppressed populations. (Consider any shortcomings or inconsistencies that
theory/theories have when outlining how to best provide support for your population/(s).)
(Challenge the theories!!!! Are their any ethical, cultural challenges that should be
considered?)

6. Identify and discuss the strengths that members of these populations may possess or may
have developed as a result of the characteristics outlined above. (Consider biological,
psychological, and environmental sources of strength.)

7. Based on your selected theory, discuss some interventions/strategies that would be best
suited to work with your specific population

Describe your initial research approach by explaining what types of sources you read.

Describe your initial research approach by explaining what types of sources you read. Where did you find your sources?
Research Problem: In order to develop a substantial thesis later, you’ll need to make sure your research question is sufficiently debatable within the scholarly research. Describe why the research question is relevant within the academic context by describing what you’ve learned through the preliminary research thus far. As you write your post, seek to answer these questions:
What seems to be the main issue that scholars discuss surrounding your problem?
Is your problem relevant within Church History? Is it an ongoing problem or a new one?
Have you read any main views that seem to conflict with one another as it relates to your question? If so, what are they?

Explain how the personal development plan and SMART goal setting could help develop the leadership styles of the leaders within the organization.

Competency
In this project, you will demonstrate your mastery of the following competencies:
Craft a communication strategy for internal and external audiences
Leverage internal and external intelligence to inform decision making
Develop an adaptable leadership mindset and skill set

Scenario
You work as a director of leadership and learning for an organization that makes prosthetics. The organization has been in business since 1999 and employs over 350 people in its Tampa, Florida, headquarters and three plant locations across the Southwest. While the business is currently based in the United States, the organization is exploring ways to move into Canadian markets within the next three years. This year’s employee engagement survey results for the organization show that some leadership practices are rated lower, while some practices were rated higher. The new chief human resources officer (CHRO) met with the team to discuss the general results. Everyone agrees that the company’s focus should be on both specific leadership development areas perceived as strengths and on those rated as areas for improvement, primarily regarding social intelligence, emotional intelligence, and the interpersonal skills of effective leaders.
To help this initiative, your manager, the vice president of leadership and learning, asked you to create an adaptive leadership toolkit that can be used throughout the organization. To begin this work, you conducted a personal leadership self-assessment and turned this into a personal development plan. Then you shared this artifact with your manager. Your manager was impressed with the thoroughness of the personal development plan and saw value in incorporating it as an exemplar within the adaptive leadership toolkit for use by all people leaders in the organization. After receiving such positive feedback, you moved forward with creating the rest of the adaptive leadership toolkit.
Your manager has shared the adaptive leadership toolkit that you created with the CHRO, and it was well received. The CHRO wants to distribute this toolkit to all leaders throughout the organization—supervisors and above—and asks you to create a communication strategy that will help in the rollout and implementation of the adaptive leadership toolkit. For this project, you will create that communication strategy.

Directions
Overview: In this part of the communication strategy, you will summarize the business problems the organization is currently experiencing and provide an overview of trends from your analysis. You will also explain how a personal development plan and adaptive leadership toolkit can provide solutions to these challenges.

Can you bring to mind what caused the connection to this piece and the possibility of reinterpreting this from a lens of nonviolence?

What initially drew you to the piece ? What is it about the piece that “clicked” for you? Can you bring to mind what caused the connection to this piece and the possibility of reinterpreting this from a lens of nonviolence?

Things to contemplate as you consider the above questions…

Was it the formal aspects of the piece? form, shape, color, scale, graphic quality, material, medium?

Was it content? If so was it overt? oblique? realistic? abstract?

What was your immediate experience with the piece? “ah ha! yes, I can work with that!”
