Central Idea Statement
Erdrich portrays the disintegration of the relationship between two brothers, one a combat veteran and the other a civilian. The story shows that war does not just kill people’s bodies, it destroys their minds.
Discussion
“The Red Convertible” by Louise Erdrich is a story about two brothers, Lyman and Henry, who have a strong relationship with each other and their community. Lyman is a lucky businessman who can always make money while Henry is a laborer who lives paycheck to paycheck. Lyman and Henry buy a red convertible together, and they take a road trip with it. Henry later joins the army, and when he returns home, he has become totally different . The red convertible is an important symbol of the story because it shows the unity of the two brothers while they have different characters and life experiences. By portraying the disintegration of the brothers’ relationship, Erdrich shows that war does not just kill people’s bodies, it destroys their minds.
