Your paper should include a thorough literature review with at least 10 primary sources (journal articles). The goal of the paper is for you to become familiar with a particular disability and the research literature (studies: experiments, observations, survey studies etc.) focused on that disability. You are not only describing a particular disability, but summarizing recent research findings relevant to that particular disability. You should focus on a developmental disability which we are not covering, in order to broaden your exposure to the field. I suggest putting considerable thought in to this and coming up with a topic you

have always wanted to know more about, or that would be helpful to you to know more about. Then search for journal articles that are focused on that topic (perhaps start with a “psycinfo” search, and review the empirical literature in that area. The paper is intentionally broad to allow you to focus on subtopics that are of most benefit / most useful to you. I want to see that you are familiar with the primary source literature surrounding a particular topic – much like an Introduction section would read in a journal article. You don’t necessarily need to make any specific arguments, or argue for / against something – you are simply overviewing a disability and summarizing the recent research literature in a particular area.
Structure of the paper
It is expected that the paper will include a thorough overview of a particular disability (based on information from journal articles). You should have separate subheadings covering topics such as the prevalence of the disability, characteristics associated with the disability (strengths and challenges), diagnosis procedures, possible interventions and treatments, and other prominent subtopics that would be important for that particular disability. You might then go into more detail on a particular area (e.g. physical therapy interventions, impact on family, educational context, etc.). Avoid structuring the paper around the journal articles you find. Rather, use your initial reading of the literature to decide on important subtopics relevant to that disability. Then use those to identify specific papers you can include. Also avoid reviewing journal articles like a list with a description of one study, followed by description of next study etc. Try to summarize across articles, integrate articles together, synthesize across articles. Reading an Introduction section of a journal article should give you a good idea of what this looks like.
It should be 6-8 pages long, double spaced (not including your Reference section, abstract or cover page). It must be in APA style (reference section, in-text citations, running head, title page, abstract). Make sure you are using academic sources for your work (books, journals), not material from the internet (which is not typically peer reviewed). Avoid using quotes – paraphrase instead (as is typical in psychological writing). Grading will focus on depth of knowledge, insight, and understanding evident in the paper, as well as your ability to synthesis an argument across multiple sources (e.g.
