Changing Nature of Mass Media

Throughout history, mass media has played an important role in communicating information to a broad range of audiences. As the different forms of mass media have evolved, so has the extent of their influence on society.

__What two types of traditional media do you rely on most? (Traditional media would be newspapers, magazines, television, radio, and motion pictures.) What do you use them for, and what kinds of gratifications do you get from using them? If you do not use any of these traditional media, tell why they do not appeal to you.

__Are you an active social media user? If so, what platforms do you use and why do you use them? There are lots of questions these days about whether we can trust social media to work in our best interests. Do you have concerns about trusting the social media platforms you use? Explain your thinking on this.

__Have you ever had to go without some form of electronic media you regularly use? (For example, maybe you went on a camping trip and were not able to get cell phone service to use your smart phone.) Describe the experience. Was it a pleasant respite from the drama of 24/7 media content? Or was it an anxiety-producing experience because you felt disconnected and ‘out of the loop’ on issues?

__If you could change one of the forms of media you now use, how would you change it and why? Would your proposed change run afoul of the First Amendment to the Constitution which has a few things to say about people’s right to communicate and associate freely in our society?
