The Internet resource adds some additional reasons why an
organization can be in decline beyond those described in the text. One of these
is “insular thinking.” This happens when the organization tends to
hire and promote individuals who have the same mindset and background.
Sometimes in a rural area, such as the Iron Range of Minnesota, much emphasis
is given to staffing organizations with people who “understand us.”
While having a shared history and culture can be beneficial, too much emphasis
on this can stifle innovation and inhibit the organization from identifying
problems that are more obvious to someone who sees it from the outside. (Add
