Characteristics of Social Development in Children Ages 5-12

Introduction
Decisions you make about child guidance should be directly related to a child’s stage of social development. Knowing the developmental stages of children’s social development will help you plan and implement valid learning situations in which children learn to explore their environments individually and in groups.

What are 5-12 year old children like socially? What do they like to do? With whom do they like to interact? How do they form relationships? How do they express their feelings? These and many more questions about social development need to be explored before you assume full responsibility for a group of children.
This assignment fulfills Module Objective 1: Students will have summarized characteristics of social development in children ages 5-12. It also fulfills Course Objectives 5 and 9: Students will have reviewed the developmental stages of children ages 5-12, identifying developmental characteristics and competencies and identified characteristics of social development in children ages 5-12 and explored characteristics of self-discipline.

The Assignment

In this assignment, you will explore social development of these age groups a little more closely: ages 3-5, Age 5-8, ages 8-10, ages 10-12. For each age group, identify the characteristics children exhibit in each of the following categories: self-concept, gender identity, and socialization. In the socialization category, address the 5 questions posed in the introduction above. Finally, include a narrative describing how you as a teacher/caregiver can impact a child’s social development.
