For your final essay assignment this semester, please characterize, compare, and contrast Frederick Douglass’s Narrative of the Life of Frederick Douglass (1845) with Narrative of the Life and Adventures of Henry Bibb, An American Slave, Written by Himself (1849).
In writing your essay, please be sure to consider these narratives both as history and as literature, as well as efforts at social justice. In addition, please be sure to ground your essay in the secondary source scholarship on African American slavery and the slave narrative, such as John Blassingame’s book The Slave Community: Plantation Life in the Antebellum South (1972, revised 1979), Charles T. Davis and Henry Louis Gates, Jr’s edited collection The Slave’s Narrative (1985), and William T. Andrews’s definitive study of slave narrators, To Tell a Free Story: The First Century of Afro-American Autobiography, 1760-1865 (1987). You might also want to consider making reference to Harriet Jacobs’s Incidents in the Life of a Slave Girl (1861) and Solomon Northup’s Twelve Years a Slave (1853).
