Chaucer deals with both noble and elevated themes such as honor and unrequited love as well as common and base themes such as rape and dishonor. Basing your observations on the “General Prologue,” and the “Knight’s Tale,” discuss how Chaucer’s work differs from the Old English epic Beowulf and the medieval romance Sir Gawain and the Green Knight. Are elements common to these earlier works apparent in Chaucer’s writing? How does he go beyond them? How does Chaucer’s work reflect the development and maturation of English culture? Each of the characters on pilgrimage, as introduced in the General Prologue, were meant to have their own tales in the Canterbury collection. What is the significance of the pilgrimage? How are the tales related to changing theological movements and ideas in England and Europe? What does the nature of these characters suggest about the changing social composition of England and the waning of the Medieval period?
