We certainly have reason to be cautious of many man-made chemicals. We’ve created things that never existed in nature, are toxic, and resist bio-degradation. However, a chemical does not have to be “man-made” or “synthetic” to be harmful, as some of the most toxic substances on the planet are naturally existing molecules. Chemophobia is a reflexive, rejection of all chemicals. Put another way, it is a fear of any “chemicals”. In fact most of the public does not understand what constitutes a molecule or a chemical compound and this leads to an irrational fear of the many man-made and natural innocuous or beneficial chemical compounds. You witnessed the fear associated with the covid 19 vaccine, composed of multiple chemical compounds, from the lack of information about science, biology, and chemistry. In general the state of science education in this country is weak and this leads to misunderstanding and fear. Suggest ways to combat chemophobia. Be creative. For example, workshops in local grocery stores to help patrons learn to read nutrition labels but also focused on the idea that “chemicals” are natural and all around us might be one approach (or make it a requirement for all college students to take a chemistry course?). Your post should be on the topic and approximately 200-400 words
