1. After completing the reading for this week, your assignment is to consider the following:
Explain the definition of a “teratogen” and find a scientific (i.e., journal publication, NO news or personal sources) article that explains the effects of a particular teratogen. Discuss the importance of mental health support for pregnant women and how the pregnancy may be impacted.
2. After completing the reading for this week, your assignment is to consider the following:
Watch the TED talk given by Biotechnologist Juan Enriquez (video embedded on the cover of the “Intro to Child Psychology” weekly activity folder). His work touches on one of our greatest debates in psychology…nature vs. nurture. Discuss your opinion on possible future “genetic upgrades” and how you think technology may be leading to greater brain evolution (i.e., a modified future human species).
How does this research demonstrate the plasticity of our brain? Why is plasticity an important feature in our understanding of how children develop?
Write a short answer response of about 1-2 paragraphs (minimum 150 words) about it.

3. After reading about the methodologies used in the field of child developmental research (from the “Research Methods” materials in the Intro to Child Psychology folder), use the library database (click here

) ( then search under “P” for Psychology journals, I recommend PsycArticles and PsycInfo – click on database name, enter a topic into the search field, select “full text”) or any other scientific database you have access to (this means NO NEWS sources, blogs, or websites that end in “.com” – only peer-reviewed literature from educational resources (databases or articles shared on “.edu”, “.gov”, or “.org” sites) to do some research of your own. Find an article on a child psychology topic (i.e., education, emotional disturbances, trauma, testing, gender roles, etc.) that interest you.
Share a copy of the article by uploading a copy or providing a link and briefly describe the methodologies and procedures used by the researchers in the study. Discuss why these research methods were appropriate for the population and variables studied or if you think the study could have been improved by the used of different methods.
