After completing the readings, resources, and activities for this week, including watching the Orphan Trains Video (~55 min), reflect on the following prompts.
Take some time to think and reflect upon what you now know about policy implementation specific to child welfare. You may choose to do a concept map, a VoiceThread response, a written Moodle post, a few slides of a PPT with images, or something else that is creative. The main point is that you have reflected upon and engaged with the material, then followed your path of learning to show what you now know!
Prompts (Choose 1)
What parallels do you see between the Orphan Train movement, the policies of separating Native American children through boarding schools, forced adoptions, and recent events related to child welfare (e.g., Trump’s policy of zero tolerance regarding family separation at the US/Mexico border, policies of child welfare in the pandemic of schooling)?
Choose one policy from the videos you watched or that you are familiar with and discuss the implementation of that policy, with particular note to the role of social workers. (Refer to the Birkland chapter.)
How would you describe our government’s policy implementation of child and family separation to a friend who hadn’t seen these videos, or ever learned about forced boarding schools, forced adoptions, the Orphan Trains, zero tolerance at the US/Mexico border, etc.?
