Pick one of the following prompts. Write a brief essay (no more than 5 pages, minimum 3 pages, double spaced, times new roman, 12 font). Remember to use MLA style to cite your sources. Do not use sources outside of those provided in class. Do not plagiarize, make sure to cite all your quotes and paraphrasing.
Pick Prompt 1 OR Prompt 2 (you don’t have to do both)
Prompt 1:
In class we have watched numerous feature length films connected to issues of gender, race, and zombies. Using at least one of these films, write an essay explaining how it represents gender and/or race.
Using at least two readings from class, make an argument about how the film represents gender/race and what this tells us about that historical time period. What assumptions can you make about that time period and their attitudes about gender and race based on the film?
Prompt 2:
In the chapter “The Zombie Film and Its Cycles,” Kyle Bishop describes the changing symbolism of the zombie. Over the years, the meaning of the zombie has changed.
He writes:
“Zombie cinema has been around in one form or another for over 70 years now, and like other genres, it has gone through developmental periods of both feast and famine. In fact, the frequency of these movies has noticeably increased during periods of social and political unrest, particularly during wars such as those in Vietnam and Iraq” (pg 13)
Choosing two films from class, I want you to compare and contrast the meaning of the zombies. What does the zombie symbolize in each film? How does historical context shape that symbol of the zombie? Do the two films have similar or different meanings for the zombie and why is that the case?
