The United States is based on the principles of liberty, equality, and freedom. These concepts are evident in the Declaration of Independence and the United States Constitution. However, not all Americans have enjoyed these so-called “inalienable rights,” and many have struggled to attain liberty, freedom, and political, social, and economic equality. Choose one of the following groups and write about their collective experience between 1865 and the present. What challenges have they faced and why? What opposition have they posed in response to unfair treatment? You may choose to write about a specific era, event, sub-group, etc. For instance, if you would like to focus on Asian Americans, you might research the Chinese Exclusion Act, Japanese internment during World War II, or similar.
