For this writing assignment I want you to consider the “artifact” –our syllabus, (remember an artifact can be any document, picture, FB post, song, video, commercial, ad, or anything that can be analyzed).
In, 1 – 1.5 pages double spaced (300 – 350 words), I want you to write about the syllabus. Don’t be intimidated, I won’t be offended! I simply want you to analyze many different aspects of the syllabus. Here are some suggestions:
Critically analyze our syllabus. Think about the authors (there are multiple authors in our syllabus), who are they (hint: 1 is me, but who (what) else contributes to the syllabus)? What is the purpose of the syllabus (there are a few purposes), how is the argument of the syllabus made (ie. format, rhetorical appeals, etc)? How is the important information presented?
Remember the rhetorical appeals are: Ethos (credibility), how is credibility built by myself and the other authors, Logos (logic) what are the logical arguments and how are they made, and finally, Pathos (emotion) is there any instance of an emotional appeal in the syllabus?
Is the syllabus effective? What is it trying to persuade you to do, short term and long term? Would this be written differently if your mom or a friend were trying to persuade you to do something? What discourse community does the syllabus belong to?
Finally is there anything else you notice about the syllabus you want to discuss? Is it similar or different from other syllabus you have been given?
Use the syllabus for our class available in the Syllabus on our Canvas page. This should be a 1-2 page paper, double spaced, written in 12 pt. font, 1″ margins and use Times new Roman or Calibri font.
