Nella Larsen’s Passing (1929) and our next text, Jennie Livingston’s Paris is Burning (1990), explore urban subjects who independently move throughout New York City, but whose
movements are nonetheless dictated by class, gender, sexuality, and race. In your final essay, you will act as a critic: your task is to create an independent claim that extends from
both from a close reading of the primary text and secondary texts of your choosing (see “Annotated Bibliography”).
Through a close reading of the final scene in Passing and key scenes of your own choosing, make a claim regarding the Larsen’s treatment of Clare Kendry (Bellew): what
commentary does Larsen provide regarding either class, race, sexuality, or gender through Irene’s inexplicable anger towards Clare and Clare’s subsequent death? While I ask you to centralize your claim around the economic, racial, gender-based, or sexual limitations faced by Clare and/or Irene, it is both permissible and likely that you will touch on the other
considerations as well. Simply be explicate about how the other considerations relate to your overarching claim (thesis) in your minor claims.
