This week and semester we are learning about the SES lens (social ecological systems resilience), what it is, and how to apply it assessing climate design interventions.
The assignment this week is finalization your SES analysis of a case study/precedent and prepare a short (5 min-ish) presentation.
Project description: Work with a partner (social capital, collaboration) to develop a “sharable” artifact (collages, slide deck, sketches, diagrams, performance, story) that helps us as your colleagues to understand the project, how it attempts to address climate issue(s), and how well it contributes to SES resilience. We will review/discuss these together, and continue learning as we review them.
1. Choose a design project/intervention that addresses a climate issue(s) —these can include greenhouse gas emissions (mitigation) and/or climate change and/or extreme climate events (adaptation).
2. Assess the project through an SES lens. Answer the following:
How does it meet the needs of SES? Social (human) systems? Ecological/natural systems and species?
How does it enable SES resilience? SES resilience is “the capacity of the social ecological system to absorb disturbance and reorganize while undergoing change to retain function.”
3. Use the (3x) SES tools to analyze the case study.
An example of a climate response that encourages SES resilience: a wetland park along the coastline that helps to mitigate the impact of a storm and its affects on people systems (homes, businesses etc) while also encouraging biodiversity of species (ecological systems), and absorb carbon (green plants). This park might also have educational and volunteer opportunities to help local people learn about SES resilience so that they can actively play a role in changing and adapting their city/community with climate change. The wetland park helps absorbs disturbances of climate change such as sea level rise and extreme climate events such as hurricanes, while fostering change with social systems (people learning and participating), and retaining function (homes and businesses as well as other species are able to live and reproduce).
Bring a project idea to discuss/workshop with the learning community. Create an image that helps us into your project idea
so we can discuss
Project criteria:
The project/case study needs to interest you or one that you have worked on (work, studio, Gateway, community practice,
thesis, other etc)
You will be able to analyze the project using the SES framework and tools
You will be able to center a group or community that has been historically marginalized or is an environmental justice
community.
