Guideline Evaluation Assignment
The purpose of this assignment is to help the DNP student to work in a team environment and determine the quality of a professional practice guideline. Not all guidelines are created equal and not all are formulated well. The ability to review the quality of a practice guideline is critical in the process of determining quality evidence in which to base policy and practice. In practice, guideline development or revision is done in a group of professionals, so this assignment will be done in groups. You will review a professional clinical guideline and make decisions as per the checklist as a group.
Instructions for Group Sign-Up:
This is a team effort paper. Go to the “People” tab to sign up for teams of 2 or 3 students each group – Groups are numbered using small group faculty names.
The computer automatically chooses a team lead (you will see name posted in blue in group tab) This person is charged with uploading the draft and final paper into Turnitin and canvas for each group. How teams disperse the work on this project is up to the team.
Assignment Instructions:
Obtain an original guideline. Professional organization guidelines, clinical practice guidelines and the National Guideline Clearinghouse (https://www.thecommunityguide.org/resources/national-guideline-clearinghouse (Links to an external site.)
(Links to an external site.)
) are great places to start looking. Chapter 8 in your textbook has additional information and resources for finding guidelines.
Do not use the same guideline (can be same topic) as another group (check the Guideline Paper discussion board for student uploads in your small faculty group).
Introduce your guideline and identify the rationale for selection of this guideline related to your clinical practice.
Critique the original guideline using the grading rubric criteria and Rapid Appraisal Questions for Evidenced-Based Guidelines Checklist (RCA) in Appendix B of your textbook to guide you. Critique & address each section in detail in the paper (see #6 below).
Do not use the long questions on The RCA Checklist as paragraph headers (Use APA level I & II headings)
Do not give one sentence answers to each question, provide information as to why you are making the evaluator statement. Professional writing is expected.
Provide rationale for each of your evaluator statements in an APA formatted paper detailing how the process was accomplished or any bias/validity issues. Faculty are evaluating you on substance and detail of your evaluation.
Identify applicability to your patient population.
Suggest ways in which this guideline could be used in your practice setting.
Provide an overall summary of your evaluation.
Using your chosen guideline, place the information into an evaluation table according to the template provided below.
Limit to 10 pages (not including the title page or references)
Upload paper draft into the Turnitin Draft plagiarism software upload provided – only one member (team leader) should upload one copy and not everyone on the team
Upload final copy into Turnitin
Also post the guideline used when uploading final copy of assignment to Canvas.
Evaluation Table: The guideline article you are critiquing should be placed in an evaluation table using the template provided.

****Make sure that tables are APA formatted
Do not use “Evidence Table” as your table title. The title should reflect what you are presenting in the table. See “General Guidance on Tables and Figures” in your APA textbook.
Additional Information:
Use the assignment & rubric & Rapid Critical Appraisal checklist to help guide paper composition. Also review Chapter 8: Advancing Optimal Care with Robust Clinical Practice Guidelines.
