Homework #1: Describing Experiences In their essays in Reading Packet 2, N. Scott Momaday and G Gordon Liddy present descriptions of experiences during which young people come to adult knowledge of the world. In doing so, they offer us two good examples of how to go about painting a vivid picture of events- they have shown us how to “show.” For this assignment, you will choose some cxperience you have had that you think others might be interested in hearing about (and which you are willing to share in public)- one that is relevant to the challenges of paying for college and/or maintaining success as a college student. In a brief passage (say, between 0.5 and 1.0 pages), you will then describe that experience, using “showing” techniques to make your descriptions vivid. Remember, the key to good “showing” is to slow things down. Given only half a page to work with, you’ll do better to “show” 6 scconds of plot, than 40 minutes of it.
