Columbus (see instructions (

In the late 19th century, Columbus was celebrated as a great world hero and his voyage of discovery as a great defining moment in world history. Since that time the way historians see and understand world history has changed dramatically. Columbus has been reviled as a butcher whose voyages sent thousands of Native Americans and Africans to die in barbaric ways and who paved the way for the spread of African slavery in the New World. But this point of view, while politically correct, ignores some basic questions raised by historians in the past three decades: questions about who Columbus was, in what ways he reflected the world in which he lived, the economic situation that launched his voyages, and other factors. Explain Columbus’s significance in historical context. Support your argument with examples.
