In this unit you studied two example of communication theory in a critical tradition, Habermas’s ideal speech situation and Deetz’s systematically distorted communication in corporations. For this application, you may use either or both theories.
As mentioned in the Overview, Deetz uses Habermas’s framework as a base for his theory of systematically distorted communication. You might think of Deetz as describing how participation in the production of meaning gets closed and think of Habermas as indicating the kind of practices that keep us involved in the production of meaning.
Assignment
In this application, develop a well-crafted essay, of at least 500 words, that uses the work of Habermas and/or Deetz to assess the argument made by Michael Pollan about animal rights.
The issue is not whether or not you support animal rights. The issue is how well Pollan discursively redeemed his claims or used speech acts to achieve discursive closure.
You should use at least two detailed examples to support your evaluation of Pollan’s argument.
In this application, use at least one authoritative source to support your analysis. The source may be academic or popular. Include bibliographic information in your essay and in a works cited section.

Evaluation
The practical application for Unit 3 is 17.5 points.
Work the meets the requirements of the assignment generally will be considered satisfactory (+/- 13 points). Work that exhibits a sensitivity to the relevant theoretical discourses, makes use of the relevant theoretical taxonomies and displays evidence of critical thinking generally will be considered above average (+/- 15 points). Work that has well-developed ideas, that introduces new or stimulating ideas, exhibits an exceptional ability to use the relevant theoretical discourses and taxonomies and provides clear evidence of critical thinking generally will be considered excellent (+/- 17 points). Timeliness, mechanics and style will temper the general evaluation of the practical applications.
