Assignment: Prepare and present a short speech (3-4 minutes) that commemorates a person you find inspiring. The subject may be historical or contemporary, famous or obscure. In previous semesters, students have chosen to speak about Presidents and about their own grandparents. It’s only important that you think this person is inspiring, and you think an average community college student could be inspired by his/her story, too.
A preparation outline is not required for this speech. For this speech, read Chapter 18 about special occasion speeches and then read Chapter 12 about language choices. Look for creative ways to include things like metaphors, similes, and rhythm within your presentation, so that as you speak, it’s easy to listen.
Rehearse thoroughly to present your speech with strong eye contact and dynamic vocal variety. Practice and time yourself carefully; going over or under the time limit will result in a grade reduction. No visual aid is required for this speech, though you can obviously use one if you think one could improve what you have to say. You should do some research for this presentation, but, due to the nature of the topic you choose, your research might include personal interviews or other “less scholarly” sources than is normal. (Any and all sources MUST BE CITED VERBALLY, during your speech.)
Speeches that follow the guidelines, seem rehearsed, and meet the time constraints will earn excellent grades, so take this speech seriously!
