Purpose:
You will be analyzing a specific commercial using close reading skills to develop a strong interpretation that is persuasive and compelling for your chosen commercial. This will involve “informing” by referencing specific plot elements from the commercial and “persuading” by providing explanations of those elements that relate to the 15 Appeals and audience. You will choose the commercial yourself. It cannot be any commercial previously used for an assignment in this course.
Audience:
The audience will be scholars and fellow English students looking for a modern interpretation of your chosen commercial. Assume that your audience is already familiar with your chosen commercial and avoid only plot summarizing the commercial.
Genre:
This is a literary analysis involving the 15 Appeals of advertisements. You will analyze a commercial of your choosing that is not connected to any of the weekly assignments for this unit. A thesis statement must be well-developed and proven throughout the analysis. For more specific information, please refer to Chapter 17 Literary Analyses and the 15 Appeals reading in Moodle.
You will follow these writing conventions that apply to literary analysis:
· Quote from the commercial (if there are words), but only individual words or small phrases at a time (no more than a line at a time)
· Write in third person (avoid using “I, me, my, you, your”)
· Write in present tense
Minimum Requirements:
2-3 pages (from introduction to conclusion)
Between 800-1000 words (from start of introduction to end of conclusion)
MLA Style, Times New Roman 12pt font, double-spaced
1 source allowed only: the commercial itself. Just provide the title of the commercial and the URL link to the commercial. No other sources allowed.
