Part 1

Now that you’re in school and are getting an education to pursue a career, consider the risks and benefits of the career you’ve chosen. You didn’t make this choice lightly, so you have some idea of what the future holds. This is something you’ve studied, you’ve researched. You may even know people in this field (maybe even a family member) who inspired, advised, and/or warned you. Be prepared to discuss the specifics, the pros and cons, of what you’ve committed to in choosing this particular career. Expect to compose about a page, approximately 250 words or more.

Part 2

Select one of the following readings:

“The Factory” by Sean Riley
“A Farmer’s Work Is Never Done” by John Coe
Down and Out in Paris and London (chapter XI)
“Blue Collar Brilliance” by Mike Rose
Consider the – or a – person in the piece, or referred to in the piece (such as in “The Factory”), and write about the benefits he or she might enjoy in this kind of work as well as the challenges he or she has to face, or might face, on the job. Be as specific as you can with the details and make sure you are connecting to what is actually in the chapter, poem, or article. You do not need to cite passages (you can, if you wish), but it must be clear that your response is directly connected to what’s addressed in the piece. In other words, don’t write about factory workers, farmers, waiters, waitresses in general; stick to what you think this specific person is dealing, or had to deal, with. Be prepared to compose about a page here, too (250 words or more).
