1) Read Ch. Three Adapting to Others
Look at the different dimensions of culture in Ch. 3, pick 2 dimensions of culture that pertain to your own culture. Describe, and explain each of them.
Describe and explain the two dimensions of another culture that are different from what you pick for A) above.
Because of the cultural differences between A and B, what is one possible challenge, if not conflict, can happen between people from these two differing backgrounds?
Explain how you will handle the challenge as you mention in C above, using the Intercultural Communication Strategies from the book, to resolve the issue and have a mutually enriching intercultural interaction.
Format your paper as follows:
Paragraph One: My Cultural Dimension 1: Name of dimension: explain in your own words the characteristics of this dimension.
Paragraph Two: My Cultural Dimension 2: Name of dimension: explain in your own words the characteristics of this dimension.
Paragraph Three: Cultural Dimension 1 of another culture: Name that dimension: explain in your own words the characteristics of dimension 1.
Paragraph Four: Cultural Dimension 2 of another culture: Name that dimension: explain in your own words the characteristics of dimension 2.
Paragraph Five: One possible challenge or misunderstanding between these differing cultures (yours and the culture you pick for Paragraphs 3 and 4)
Paragraph Six: Name the intercultural communication skill or strategy from the book. Describe what you will do, using your named strategy, to turn this challenge (paragraph 5) into a mutually beneficial intercultural encounter.
2) Read Ch. 4 Listening
Take the following two assessments:
Listening Habits assessment on p.61, And
the Student Listening Inventory on p.73.
Then pick Two listening habits you want to improve on, and describe the strategies you will use for each of these two habits.
Format your paper as follows:
Paragraph One: Name of your Listening Habit One –quote directly from the book the definition of this habit, (including the page number where you find the definition).
Paragraph Two: Name the strategy from the book (page number where you find the strategy) you will adopt. Then in your own words, describe what exactly you will do to practice using that strategy.
Paragraph 3, and 4, repeat the above, for the 2nd listening habit you want to improve on.
Please make sure you cite the page number from the textbook or the grade will reflect improper citing.
