Checklist:
Do I have a cover page in APA format?
Do I have a short (about 100 words) abstract, on its own page, labeled “Abstract,” which states my research question, which two disciplines I’m comparing, and gives a single-sentence summary of what the answer to my research question is, based on the articles I compared?
In the body of the paper, did I clearly state my research question? Something like, “This paper compares how the disciplines _____ and ____ address the question, ” …your question here…”
Is my research question:
Technology focused
Comparing two groups or two situations in a measurable way
Stated in terms of a specific technology and a specific measure
Free of the word “technology” per se?
Do I have two, and ONLY TWO, papers I am comparing?
Are both of them peer-reviewed? Note that books, any website, government reports, and PhD theses are NOT considered peer-reviewed.
Are each of those from a different discipline?
Did I find the discipline of each one by looking up the background of the first author? And did I cite where I found it?
Did I report on why I am assigning each author to that discipline, and state clearly what discipline I think the author falls into? For more on disciplines, read the Week One discussion in the classroom on Disciplines.
Did I cite my authors, in APA format, in the text? Example citation for a three-author paper: (Smith, Jones & Blue, 2015, p.3).
Did I cite my authors in full in APA format at the end of the paper, starting on a new page labeled “References”? For more on citation see the “APA cheat sheet” in Course Resources.
Did I write a conclusion that compares how the two papers ANSWERED MY RESEARCH QUESTION?
Did I clearly state the answer to my research question?
Did I avoid first person (me, my, I) and keep my opinion out of it?
Did I avoid pasting in too much from my sources? (A sentence or two a few times is about right.)
Did I run a grammar check and fix issues?
From the course outline:
Comparative Critical Review (module 4): The assignment must be submitted to the NU dropbox as a Word file.
You will select two relevant academic essays from two disciplines (the two articles must be from different disciplines, based on the background of the first author of each one). Analyze the articles similarities and differences in light of each discipline’s point of view. This assignment should use your research question as its focus. It will be useful to see how two disciplines are different, how they overlap, and perhaps how they may spring from a common source. NOTE: ONLY use two articles for this assignment, no more and no less, from different disciplines. Detail the qualifications of each author to represent his or her discipline.
When tackling this project only choose articles from peer-reviewed academic journals. For example, if one of your disciplines is economics, one of your papers needs to be written by an economist AND published in a peer-reviewed journal (not necessarily an economics journa, though- the author’s discipline is the criterion for the article’s discipline.)There are wide assortments available in the National University Library as well as journal databases online. If you want to propose using other sources please see the instructor for approval. Wikipedia is never an acceptable source for this course in general and this assignment in particular.
The material for this assignment should use as its core the same research question you plan to use for your research (recommended) or a different one. The assignment must be submitted as a Word file in the dropbox, and should be between 1400 and 2100 words. APA style must be used. See the items under Module 1 (“Read Me: The Research Process” and “Read Me: Disciplines” for more details.)
