The Thomas Paine and Judith Sargent Murray readings stray from our previous readings in the sense that they focus more on Reason and the advancement of society through education, independence, and logical thinking. However, there is also a common running theme, and that is American identity. The essence, perhaps, of American identity remains the same; however, it does change and these progressions are reflected across our readings so far. With this in mind, compare and contrast Americanism (the American identity) as it is expressed in previous readings with Paine’s and Murray’s.
