Paper 4, Comparison and Contrast—a Novel/Film Analysis
Length, 4-5 pages
Please include the MLA heading on the first page of the assignment; include your last name and page number in the far right corner of each page. Use 12 size font, Times New Roman, or Courier. I also ask that you double-space content and indent paragraphs. Please avoid including extra spaces between paragraphs.
Focus:
Introduction: Offer a summary of the novella and the selected media outlet. Please do not develop half a page of summary. Also, clearly identify the common focus between the two.
Compare and contrast how Anthem by Ayn Rand and a film, movie, song, etc., of your choice present and interpret a common theme. To add depth to your comparison, you will use two scholarly articles that critique or interpret the novel and selected media outlet. Please do not use book or movie reviews—these are not scholarly. A successful approach to this essay is to compare elements from the novel (characters, setting, conflicts, symbols, etc.) and the media outline to examine how these two works are similar and different in exploring a common theme. The essay must conform to MLA guidelines and include an accurately developed Works Cited page.
You may also consider using one of the literary theories or criticisms that apply to the novel and media outlet. Please review Chapter 9: “Literary Criticism and Literary Theory” in RWAL to learn more about these devices. Limit yourself to using just one.
Conclusion: Rather than offer a summary of your essay, include your thoughts about the novella and selected media outlet. Did you enjoy the novel? Why or why not? Did you learn anything? If so, what? Why did you choose the media outlet?
Keep in mind that the Works Cited page is not included in the page count.
