Examine these two men and compare and contrast their backgrounds, lives, presidencies, beliefs. Make sure to
include their understanding on the power of the Federal government in relation to the States of the Union, their view
of the proper role of the United States in the world, and the limitations on the power of the presidency. Also, what do
they say about the Union itself? The armed forces of the United States?
Use only the following sources. They will be used and cited in the paper. Use quotes from these sources to help your
argument.
Also use The Miller Center (google search this). Click on Presidents, then on either of these men’s entry and use their
biographies (not the Life in Brief) and scroll down to below the portrait and click on speeches. For J.Q. Adams use his
Speech to the US House of Representatives on Foreign Policy (this is an abridged version, but will work), Message
Regarding the Creek Indians (be careful with this one- there is more here than first appears), and the 1st and 2nd
annual messages (sometimes written annual addresses) to Congress. For Jackson use his First and Second
Inaugurals (who does he quote in the second?), his Nullification Proclamation, and his Farewell Address. Use these
sources and no others in writing the paper. The speeches should be used extensively in the paper.
Assigned Essay: The student will write an essay on the topic given by instructor. The paper should be typed,
double-spaced, and 6-7 pages in length. 12 font size and 1 inch margins. In addition to the 6-7 pages include
endnotes and a bibliography as separate pages. Papers will be accepted or not. The student must follow the essay
prompt for the paper to be accepted. Turabian (Chicago) style will be used. Use Notes-Bibliography (NB) style of Turabian (Chicago), and use Endnotes NOT Footnotes.
