In this essay you will be comparing democratic government in Australia and the United States. In addition to identifying differences between democratic government in the two countries, you will be evaluating these differences.
You will identify at least one strength of American democracy relative to Australian democracy, and at least one strength of Australian democracy relative to American democracy. If you want, you can identify more than one strength for each, but you need at least one for each.
In each discussion of these relative strengths, you must explain why a particular feature of one country’s democratic government is, in your view, better than what the other country has. It is up to you to decide what is “better”, but you have to rigorously explain your choice. You might like the way that American Presidents have term limits (i.e. they can only serve eight years at the most). You might like the fact that voting is compulsory in Australia. Or you might see either of these things as weaknesses, and prefer the opposite arrangement in the other country. Whatever you prefer, you have to explain why it is better, using examples and data where possible. Remember you have to find a relative strength for each country!
Throughout, you should think about what is good for democracy. This isn’t always easy, because there are a lot of different views of what democracy is, or should be.
