Essay Questions choose of these question of your exam you will answer one of these questions (chosen by the instructor) for 40
points. A good answer will consist of a unified coherent essay with an introduction, body, and
conclusion. Give evidence to support your arguments, include details and specific examples
wherever possible, and remember to cite sources. Your essay should be between 400 and 1,000
words, not including citations.
1) Compare the origins and fundamental teachings of Judaism, Christianity, and Islam. How are
they related? Then contrast them, analyzing how each uniquely addresses the fundamental problem
of mankind and mankind’s relationship to God. What are some of the contributions each has made
to world civilization, both in the ancient/medieval world and today?
2) Analyze the changes the Islamic Empire experienced from the 7th to the 15th centuries CE.
How did its initial growth impact the Afro-Asian world religiously, politically, culturally, and
socially? What challenges and threats did the empire face during the latter stages of this period and
how did its leaders respond to them? What was the lasting legacy of those efforts?
3) Analyze the changes East Asia experienced from the 9th to the 15th centuries CE (Tang to Ming
dynasties). Assess the role the Mongols played in that transition, and the impact it had on the
region. What factors contributed to the Mongols’ demise and what happened to East Asia as a
result?
4) Analyze the changes Europe experienced from the 5
th to the 15th centuries CE. What
consistencies did Europe hold onto from its Roman heritage? What new characteristics emerged and
why? When, where, and why did the Renaissance happen and what were some of its lasting
effects?
