to others (specifically Europe). In the articles linked below, the first author explains how sports
reveals our instincts for tribalism, also displayed in politics and religion. In the second article, the
authors argue that sports and its rituals are replacing religion in American culture, which follows the
pattern in Europe where organized religion has been in decline for decades.
