We have also studied the use of animal allegory in Maus to convey the events of World War II, and the use of animal and bird imagery in A Doll’s House when Torvald refers to Nora by pet names. In your essay, discuss how two or more authors that we’ve studied use animal symbolism in their literary texts to express specific themes or ideas.
2. CURRENT ISSUES: The texts that we have studied take place in the distant past, and yet many of the themes or conflicts faced by the characters presented in these
texts continue to be relevant to events or issues of today and are still relatable. As social movements like #METoo and Black Lives Matter among others are shared on social media, and reports of unmarked graves at the sites of residential schools make headlines, it is clear that gender and racial equality is still a work in progress in Canada and around the world. In your essay, discuss the continued relevance or relatability of the themes, conflicts or characters in at least two different course texts as they relate to a current issue(s) we face in society today.
3. APPEARANCE VS. REALITY: As the saying goes, “don’t judge a book by its cover.” These wise words tell us to look beyond our surface impressions of a person and try to empathize and understand the deeper layers of why that person is the way they are. Using this idea in your essay, explore any two (or more) characters from 2 different texts that we’ve read and discuss how the surface impression of that person does not provide an accurate representation of their true nature.
