Compose a rhetorical analysis essay based on the films and/or documentary we have viewed and discussed in class. You have the option of choosing from The Defiant Ones, V for Vendetta, Get Out or Us, or you can apply both Peele films. All four works address social, political, and cultural issues in the world that are relevant to current society. You will construct a 5-7 page paper that identifies and argues about the significance of racism, classism, radicalism, post-structuralism, etc., that are prevalent in the films/documentary. Then, you will define different elements of rhetoric that are used throughout the films to make a statement about your chosen issue. You must focus on multiple scenes or episodes from these works and identify what specific aspects and/or characteristics are rhetorical and how they drive the message regarding social, cultural, and/or political issues discussed in Storey’s text and given theoretical texts (found at the end of the Modules tab). *This paper must incorporate a theory! You must expand on the rhetorical significance of these characteristics and how they influence the audience and purpose. You will use one of the readings from the textbook and one from Canvas that covers these social, political, and/or cultural issues and apply it to your paper. You must also apply at least one outside scholarly source. You can access scholarly sources through the Leatherby Library website: https://www.chapman.edu/library/index.aspxLinks to an external site. or use academic websites like JSTOR.com: https://www.jstor.org/ (Links to an external site.) . Do not use sources that are not academic! That includes: .coms, .nets, Wikipedia, etc. As I said, reach out to the Writing Center or me if you want someone to look at your sources and work with you. This essay will follow a rubric which will be posted on Canvas with further questions and instructions on the essay. The paper will be due by the end of Week 7, March 20. We will review these instructions at a later date if you have any questions. *This assignment must only be submitted to Canvas as a PDF or Word Doc (nothing else)!
