You don’t have to answer every question in every journal. Just choose 2 to 3 guidelines to focus on as you read the text, and structure your response around them.
The Guidelines:
-Elaborate on the poem’s content, and be sure to include textual evidence in your discussion.
-A discussion / analysis of the poet’s persona, i.e. the poem’s speaker. Include textual evidence
-A response to a line or lines that you find significant. You can even do a close reading for the line(s), and this should be done alongside point 3 and/or 4.
-An examination of poetic techniques used, such as rhyme, alliteration, simile, metaphor, personification, allusion, consonance, rhythm [use this site to look up these terms: https://www.litcharts.com/literary-devices-and-terms],
-An analysis of the poet’s diction, perhaps noting specific word choices, or connotation and denotation. You will need a dictionary for this, such as dictionary.com.
-A discussion of the title’s significance.
-A sentence or two relating the poem to your experience or ideas or an explanation of problems you had in understanding the poem.
