Discussion 3.1: Concept Development
The development of relevant concepts has greatly influenced nursing practice and has helped it advance. The purpose of concept development is to identify, explain, and state the meaning of notions related to or are that important in regard to nursing. And not only does this encourage and stimulate knowledge, but it also connects theory, research, and practice (McEwen & Wills, 2019, p. 57). Nursing and healthcare practices are continually shifting and because of concept development, new ideas and viewpoints are being brought up to either enhance or challenge current practice. As a result, these contemporary findings are utilized, executed, and assessed (Shaha et al., 2011). Ultimately, “the process of developing, clarifying, comparing and contrasting, and integrating well derived and defined concepts is necessary for theory development and to guide research studies” (McEwen & Wills, 2019, p. 67).
Phenomenon Observed in Practice
I have been working in a neonatal intensive care unit (NICU) for the last five years. A phenomenon that I have observed in practice is revolved around providing palliative care to newborns and their families when they are in the NICU. When providing palliative care, it is part of a nurse’s role to advocate for the patient, support families, and improve the quality of life. “Despite the increasing need for neonatal palliative care, it is not adequately implemented in practice” (Banazadeh & Rafii, 2020). There have been gaps noted between providing palliative care for adults compared to a neonate and a lack of knowledge or education offered to nurses on this subject matter. Due to this, this phenomenon could be recognized, clarified, and developed into a nursing concept. The concept would be neonatal palliative care. Currently, “research indicates that the education provided to neonatal nurses does not meet their distinctive needs” (Peng et al., 2013). This concept could be used to improve nursing practice and promote NICUs to have palliative care protocols and ensure they have palliative-care trained nurses working on their unit. By developing and analyzing this concept, the purpose of neonatal palliative care can be defined and exemplified. Additionally, it can be used to further research and determine its clinical application.
