These written responses require you to 1) explain a philosophical view, 2) explain how that view
applies to a particular historical or contemporary example of science, 3) examine whether we
should accept the philosophical view.
Written responses are a maximum of 750 words (including footnotes but not including the
bibliography). Responses over the word limit will be penalized by a 5-mark deduction.
Written Response Checklist
Here are the main elements we’re looking for in your written responses:
Word count—Is your response under the word limit (750 words, including footnotes but not
bibliography)?
Introduction – Does your response begin with a short one-paragraph introduction, outlining
what you will say and what your conclusion will be?
Conclusion—Does your response end with a short clear conclusion regarding what we
should say about the philosophical view in question?
Define terms—Are technical terms appropriately defined as they are introduced?
Explanations of philosophy—Do you explain the philosophical idea or view clearly and
accurately?
Example from science—Do you explain a relevant (contemporary or historical) scientific
example clearly and accurately, and explain how it relates to the philosophical view? Is it an
illustration of that view? A counterexample?
Critical analysis—Do you attempt to argue about whether that philosophical idea is right,
preferably using your scientific example?
Clarity—Is your response written in plain and simple language that is easy to understand,
and is it structured in such a way that the reader can follow your point easily?
References—Does your response use appropriate referencing of reputable sources?
