Background: You have examined the positions of Clayton Hardiman in “Reports of the death of the English language by texting are premature; silence, however, is in grave danger,” “The health benefits of silence—and how it kills” by Helen Cowan, and “The benefits of silence and solitude” by Piedmont Healthcare. Now, you will take your own position on the topic of silence.
Task: For this essay, you must take your own position on whether or not silence is beneficial to daily human life and to what extent. Consider the following questions in crafting your essay: Is silence beneficial to daily life? Why or why not? Is silence detrimental to daily life? Why or why not? What types of silence are beneficial? What types of silence are detrimental? How can we live lives that incorporate the useful types of silence and that steer away from the detrimental types of silence? What should we do in terms of approaching silence in our lives?
Format: Your essay should have an introduction, multiple body paragraphs, and a conclusion.
Introduction: Introduction must provide context to the situation and identify your position on the topic. In your introduction, you also must integrate a perspective that is different from your own in order to start a dialog with that perspective. Your thesis statement must clearly state your position on the topic and the reasons why you hold that position.
Body Paragraphs: Each paragraph of the paper should explore a separate element of the thesis, a separate reason why you hold that position. Each body paragraph must begin with a topic sentence that identifies the specific reason that you will discuss in that body paragraph. You must provide evidence in each body paragraph. Explain how that evidence supports your claims. Remember that in order to craft an effective argument, you must employ ethos, logos, and pathos. You are required to include a counterpoint paragraph in the body of the essay. Further, in the body paragraphs, you must use evidence from “The health benefits of silence—and how it kills” by Helen Cowan, and/or “The benefits of silence and solitude” by Piedmont Healthcare, and at least one outside source (outside meaning a source that we did not discuss in class) found in the Adelphi University Library Databases.
Conclusion: Do not simply restate your thesis. Instead, identify the most important elements to take away from this discussion. Ask yourself what the significance of this topic is. Consider how your audience could use this information. In other words, if your audience agrees with you, what are the next steps they should take?
Requirements: This paper must be typed, double-spaced, and in Times New Roman font size 12. Maintain 1” margins throughout the paper. You must use third person for this paper, and the paper must be at least four full pages long. Also, use MLA style for in-text citations and the Works Cited page. You must incorporate at least one counterpoint paragraph into the body of the essay, and you must use evidence from “The health benefits of silence—and how it kills” by Helen Cowan and/or “The benefits of silence and solitude” by Piedmont Healthcare, and at least one outside source (outside meaning a source that we did not discuss in class) found in the Adelphi University Library Databases.
