contacting a University or College to find out why you were not accepted into a graduate program

1. Make sure that you address the recipient properly. Find contact information for a specific
department in a college or university. This is hypothetical. You are not actually contacting this
department, but finding out who, or at least which specific department, you should be contacting.
This is an important part of composing a formal e-mail. Use this information in your address.
2. Compose a formal e-mail introducing yourself and asking why you were not accepted into this
program. Make sure that your tone is appropriate and that you don’t leave out any information
someone would need to get back to you (you can make it up, it does not have to be accurate, but
it should show that you have thought about the kind of information the recipient would need to
get back to you)

make it as formal as possible any Canadian university
