In American Insurgents, American Patriots, on page 156 T.H. (paged is attached to this order), Breen talks about “restoring the people to the history of their own resistance.” On the back of the book, historian Douglas Brinkley calls this book “pioneering.” Alan Taylor says the book “Reminds us we have many more Founding Mothers and Father than we usually realize.”
How does this book differ from conventional treatments of the American Revolution? Breen talks about a “complex interplay” between the political elite and “what was happening on the ground.” Describe this interplay as it is portrayed in Breen’s book. Do you think Breen has left out too much of the role of the elite Founding Fathers? Or do you think he has the right balance between high politics and crowd action?
