This is just a proposal assignment that needs to consist of 2 paragragh describing a back ground to base my Covid Project off of.
You and your partner must submit two full paragraphs describing your Covid project. You should describe what medium you’ll use to present the project, who is responsible for which components, as well as a general overview of which indigenous group you’ll work with and your methods. Only one of you submits the proposal but make sure that you have both names on your submission to get full credit.
COVID-19 in Indigenous Communities Project
Assignment overview: For this assignment, you and a partner (I will assign your group in the second week of class) will pretend that you are a team of medical anthropologists designing a project to reduce the spread of COVID-19 in an indigenous community of your choice. You are competing against other teams of researchers to win a World Health Organization (WHO) grant ($1 million) to carry out the project. This assignment is your pitch to the WHO so you need to clearly explain that you have done your background research, have familiarized yourself with the cultural nuances of this community and their risk factors, and prove that you are the most qualified team for the job. You will make an aesthetically pleasing presentation or a pamphlet detailing the components of your project. You may use PowerPoint, Prezi, wix, WordPress, or Microsoft Word.
Instructions: You will pick an indigenous community anywhere in the world and conduct research on them including background research and current research on COVID-19. For the background research and insight on medical anthropology methods, you will need to use peer reviewed scholarly sources (see Canvas announcements for information on how to find these sources). Some communities might not have much information on the spread of the virus. You can be creative and still design a project that ameliorates the pandemic in their community. For every component you must justify your actions. For example, if you use focus groups to determine how the virus is spreading, explain how and why. For instance, youll use focus groups because it elicits communal knowledge and data on social elements like group activities, housing patterns, and kinship networks. You decide to conduct focus groups with only 5 people at a time, wearing masks, distanced 10 feet apart in an outdoor environment. Or, maybe you bring iPads for households and hold focus groups on zoom to avoid the risk of infection in person. Choose your medium (PowerPoint, Prez, wix, WordPress or Microsoft Word) and present your project in a professional way that convinces donors that your project deserves the grant. Below I wrote some elements to include in your project but you can add more. There is no particular length but make sure that the project is complete and feasible. That could be done in 7 to 10 PowerPoint slides as a rough estimate. I dont want you to just go through and answer each of the bullet points below in one-sentence answers. You will determine how you convey the information and you are encouraged to include details on other aspects of the project as you see fit. The project needs to look professional. This is your final project for the class – make it count.
Learning outcome: To be able to explain how anthropological methods and perspectives can apply to real world problems and convey relevant information in a professional, aesthetically pleasing medium.
Note: Think carefully about the power dynamics of this project. Are you slipping into a savior complex i.e. your powerful team of American PhDs are flying to an exotic location to aid these helpless indigenous folks who just dont understand anything about health or the world.
