Creative Writing: Sonnets
Write a sonnet in both Shakespearian and Petrarchan form. Submit your assignment to Canvas as a Word Document. Do NOT submit screenshots.
It may be on any subject you like as long as it’s appropriate for a general audience. Sonnets are fourteen lines long. However, there are differences between the two forms:
Petrarchan
One octet (eight-line stanza) presents a problem (abba rhyme pattern)
One sestet (six-line stanza) presents the resolution to the problem (cdc rhyme pattern)
Shakespearian
Three quatrains (four-line stanzas) and ending couplet (two-line stanza).
Three quatrains present a problem (often the third quatrain begins a partial resolution)
The final couplet presents the resolution to the problem
