Write a new poem, piece of flash fiction or short memoir/personal essay (you cannot use earlier work or write fan fiction). Polish it hard so that it’s publishable. Next, find somewhere to publish. You should research literary journals and find one that is an appropriate fit for your kind of writing. Choose two poems or stories that are already published by that journal and explain why your work is comparable to these published pieces. You should also know the word count, deadlines, payment and submission information for the journal. Remember, literary journals aren’t just looking for “good” writing – they’re looking for a particular length, tone, genre and style. Justify why your work fits.
a. Creative work: 1000 – 1,500 words
b. Poem/story analysis (analyzing work from that journal): 10-12 sentences
c. Publishing information and justification (why does your piece fit?): 3-5 sentences
d. What is your topic?What is your theme?How have you represented it with word choice, image, metaphor or plot?
