For this critical thinking essay, students will write a brief one to two paged, double spaced (12-point font) reflection on a predetermined topic. Students will summarize the key points of contention/debate and focus primarily on the facts. Students will then briefly conclude with a written portion on their own position with regards to the issue.
Students must choose only one topic below.
Topic #1) What social psychological aspects of the white majority are involved in the race problem? (The use of SI or CT must be used here. This relates to previous discussion but specifically the idea of white privilege.)
Topic #2) Select one of the minority groups described in the chapters covered and read a novel, autobiography, or biography that will allow you to gain an understanding of the group from the perspective of a member of that group. Then, write a review of this book. After completing the review, apply two of the theoretical perspectives, as well as related concepts, that best explain the experiences of the person about whom you are reading. You should also explain the historical context in which the person is writing to make linkages between the context and the experiences and perceptions of the individual.
Topic #3) Observe and notate various television programs to see how minorities are portrayed. For example, you can select a comedy, a drama, or a reality show. Then, draw some conclusions about whether the people are portrayed in a positive, negative, or neutral manner, whether the roles they play are realistic when compared with American society, and the extent to which the programs enhance or deter greater understanding of the minority group. (Media chapter is best used here. Additionally, students must use SI or CT in their analysis.)
Furthermore, this must be done in APA format. Refer to Purdue Owl APA (google it!) for help with formatting, including citations. Remember – since you are using sources in the paper, you must also have a reference page at the end of the paper. (In other words, the essay should have a title page, an introduction to the issue, the discussion and a conclusion. The reference page comes last. You do not have to have an abstract or literature review!)
