The chosen policy is below:
In 2001 a change was made to the Terrorism Act 2000. This authorised the police to use random ‘stop and search’ of any person without the need to apply the ‘reasonable suspicion’ clause. The alteration was made following the 9/11 ‘terrorist’ events in New York in which over 3000 people were killed and heightened security measures following this event. One outcome of the extended police ‘stop and search’ powers in the UK was the disproportionate number of ‘stops’ on people from Asian and Muslim backgrounds. Due to overuse of this police power, the legislation was repealed in 2010. Discuss the issues with this extended stop and search policing power and the benefits and limitations and what was behind the need for its repeal. Make reference to academic research and literature. – overuse repealed in 2010, what did it do? gave the police authority to stop and search anyone, without reasonable suspicion.
